Advocacy and Mediation Training
We are offering a training course for parents interested in becoming advocates to support other families through the SEN education system, including SEND legislation and the appeals process.
This training will involve 5 full-days training (within school hours), delivered by Fiona Slomovic of Advocacy and Mediation Consultants.
It is then anticipated that the trainees will then assist Fiona Slomovic by attending some Friday morning sessions to be involved in meetings with parents under her guidance and eventually to offer a triage service, either in person or by telephone.
The topics to be covered are:
- · Introduction to SEN and types of SEN
- · Law & Guidance - SEN Code of Practice, Education Act, SEN Regulations and Families Act etc
- · SEN Support & Requesting an EHC Needs Assessment
- · EHC Needs Assessment Process
- · Identifying appropriate schools - independent, maintained, non-maintained etc
- · Finalisation of the EHCP, mediation and appeals
- · Appeals part 2
- · Negotiating with LAs and best ways to support parents
The training dates are Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th, Friday 25th, Thursday 31st January and Friday 1st February 2019, all from 9.30am – 2.30pm.
We regret there is no creche available and anticipate that this training may be most suitable for parents whose children are now at full-time school.
The training will take place at the offices of Haymarket Media, who we would like to thank for their kind hospitality. Their address is Bridge House, 69 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SP. This is almost opposite Twickenham station. Many buses stop nearby and there is parking at Waitrose and other car parks.
The training will be essentially free of charge, but as we are looking for commitment from those who receive it, we are asking participants to pay a deposit of £100. This will be refunded to them when they have completed the course and given 20 hours of voluntary service at our sessions on Fridays or by telephone. Anyone who would like to take part, but would find the deposit prohibitive should book their place online and then email firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss a bursary place.
There are 8 spaces on this training course. To book your place now, please click here:
